Arrest: Joliet Man Charged with Aggravated Domestic Battery After Violent Attack at Local Hotel

JOLIET, Ill. — A local man is facing multiple charges following a violent altercation that took place at a motel late last month. Police arrested 31-year-old Joshua Mercado on allegations of aggravated domestic battery, domestic battery, and interfering with the reporting of domestic violence.

The incident occurred on October 25 at the Red Roof Inn on McDonough Street, where authorities say Mercado assaulted a woman during a heated argument. Following the incident, the victim sought treatment at St. Joseph Medical Center, where she reported the attack to hospital staff.

Around 8:30 a.m. on October 26, officers were dispatched to the emergency room after receiving reports of a domestic violence victim. According to preliminary investigations, Mercado allegedly struck, kicked, and choked the woman. At one point during the encounter, he is accused of confiscating her phone to prevent her from contacting emergency services.

After escaping the motel room, the victim managed to reach the hospital in a private vehicle. Despite law enforcement efforts, Mercado was not located immediately following the assault.

On the evening of October 28, police apprehended Mercado without incident at a Motel 6 nearby on McDonough Street. Officers discovered him in a guest room, where he was taken into custody and subsequently processed at the Joliet Police Department.

Mercado is now being held at the Will County Adult Detention Facility. He previously faced incarceration in March 2022 and remains in custody as of this week. The investigation is ongoing, and police are emphasizing their commitment to addressing domestic violence in the community. Authorities encourage anyone experiencing domestic abuse to seek help immediately.
