The fatal shooting followed earlier reports of gunfire at the same Vollmer Road site.
MATTESON, Ill. — A fatal shooting outside Amazon’s Matteson fulfillment center late Sunday renewed attention on violence reported in recent years near the facility’s parking areas.
Police said 26-year-old Amazon employee Dylan Perkins died after being shot multiple times outside the facility at 7001 Vollmer Road. Officers were called about 10:54 p.m. Sunday for shots fired and found Perkins near the entrance area. He later died at St. James Hospital.
Matteson officials said the shooting began with an argument between Perkins and a food delivery driver. Investigators said surveillance video and witnesses showed the argument becoming physical before the driver opened fire. Police had not announced an arrest or charges by Monday afternoon.
The same Amazon facility has drawn police responses before. In July 2024, a 33-year-old woman suffered a graze wound to her head after police said a fight between workers in the parking lot led to gunfire. In 2022, officials also reported shots fired in the parking lot, though no injuries were reported in that case.
Sunday night’s shooting led to a lockdown and visible police activity outside the warehouse early Monday. Patrol vehicles and crime scene tape remained near the entrance as detectives processed the area and reviewed evidence.
An Amazon spokesperson said the company was focused on supporting employees and Perkins’ family. The spokesperson said Amazon was working with Matteson police as the investigation continued.
Police have not said whether the suspect and Perkins knew each other before the confrontation. Officials also have not released details on the firearm, the number of shots fired or whether security workers were nearby when the shooting happened.
The investigation remained active Monday, with police expected to rely on surveillance footage, witness accounts and medical examiner findings as they determine whether criminal charges will be filed.
