Dominic Cicchini faces attempted murder and firearm charges after police said two people were injured during a road-rage confrontation.
CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A man accused of firing into another vehicle during a Cape Coral road-rage confrontation has been arrested after a six-day search, bringing a new phase to an investigation that left two people injured and initially sent police searching for a fleeing gunman.
The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force arrested Dominic Cicchini in Lehigh Acres on Oct. 28 during a traffic stop, according to Cape Coral police. Investigators had been seeking him since an Oct. 22 shooting near the 800 block of Santa Barbara Boulevard.
Police said Cicchini faces three counts of attempted second-degree murder with a firearm and one count of possession of a firearm or ammunition by a convicted felon. Authorities said his prior felony status prohibited him from possessing a gun. The allegations have not been proven in court.
The case began with a confrontation involving two vehicles on Del Prado Boulevard, investigators said. Police allege someone traveling in Cicchini’s vehicle threw an unidentified object at the victims’ vehicle. The occupants of the other vehicle reportedly threw the object back.
Investigators say the exchange then escalated into gunfire. One person in the victims’ vehicle was shot in the face, and another was injured by broken glass. The occupants later stopped near a plaza in the Santa Barbara Boulevard area, where police began collecting evidence and searching for the person who had fired the shots.
Cicchini was not arrested at the scene. Police said detectives developed additional evidence during the following days and identified him as the suspect. The investigation then expanded into a search that ended when the federal fugitive task force located him in Lehigh Acres.
The arrest marked a significant development for a case that had begun with officers searching the Santa Barbara Boulevard area after the shooting. A resident, Jennifer Myers, described seeing several officers using flashlights as they searched along the roadway after the incident.
Emergency recordings released after Cicchini’s arrest added another account of the immediate aftermath. Callers reported that a man had been shot and told dispatchers the shooter had left. One caller remained focused on helping an injured friend while authorities worked to locate the scene and determine where the gunman had gone.
Cape Coral police spokesperson Steven Klakowicz said the department responds to reports of reckless driving and road rage and tries to intervene before confrontations reach a more dangerous level. Once a crime occurs, he said, officers and detectives work to investigate the case.
The arrest does not resolve the criminal case. Prosecutors will have to pursue the allegations through the court system, and Cicchini is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty. Police had not publicly identified the object that investigators say was thrown between the vehicles.
Cicchini remained in custody following his arrest as the attempted murder and firearm allegations moved into the criminal justice process. Authorities have not announced additional suspects in the shooting.
