The fatal drowning was one of two child water emergencies reported by local authorities.
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Harris County investigators are reviewing witness accounts and seeking surveillance video after a 5-year-old boy died in a northwest Harris County apartment pool during the Fourth of July holiday period.
The inquiry centers on the Cortland Wortham Apartments, where deputies said a crowded pool area became the scene of a fatal emergency. The case has not led to announced charges, but officials said it will be sent to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office for review.
The Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the 10225 block of Wortham Boulevard, near North Eldridge Parkway and FM 1960, after reports that a child was in danger. Emergency medical crews were already performing CPR when deputies arrived. The child was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators said about 30 people were at the pool when the child was found. A pool patron noticed the boy in distress, alerted others and people nearby pulled him from the water. Deputies said several people left before investigators could speak with them at the scene, but officials later identified them for interviews.
The main unanswered questions are when the boy went underwater, how long he was submerged and whether anyone was responsible for watching him at the time. Authorities said the child’s mother and aunt were in another area of the pool and may not have been watching him when the incident happened.
The drowning added to a difficult holiday stretch for Harris County first responders. In Humble, deputies responded to the 15808 block of Crystal Terrace Drive after an 8-year-old child was rescued from a near-drowning and taken for medical care in serious condition. Officials released few details about what happened before that rescue.
Gonzalez described the two incidents as part of a painful holiday weekend for families and first responders. “Never leave children unsupervised near pools, bathtubs, lakes, or any body of water, even for a moment,” he said in a public statement. He also said active supervision and barriers save lives.
The northwest Harris County case remains under investigation. Detectives are expected to interview pool patrons, review any available apartment surveillance video and prepare the case file for prosecutors, who will decide whether the evidence supports charges.
