Investigators are seeking surveillance video and interviewing people detained after two vehicles left the Bayshore Drive shooting scene.
GARLAND, Texas — Garland police are examining whether a dispute that began Saturday night carried into Sunday morning and ended in a shooting that killed three men outside a home on Bayshore Drive.
The inquiry is focused not only on the gunfire but also on what happened before it. Police said the three men knew one another, and investigators were working Monday to clarify their relationships, reconstruct an earlier disturbance and determine how the conflict escalated before officers were called to the neighborhood.
Officers responded around 7:45 a.m. Sept. 13 to the 400 block of Bayshore Drive. They found three men with gunshot wounds outside a residence. Two died at the scene, and a third was taken to a hospital, where he later died. Authorities had not publicly released their identities.
Garland police spokesperson Pedro Barineau said investigators learned that the men were acquainted and that the confrontation may have been connected to a disturbance the previous night. Police had not released details about that earlier encounter, including where it occurred, what prompted it or which people were involved.
That timeline has become an important part of the investigation. Establishing what occurred Saturday night could help detectives determine why the men came into contact again Sunday morning and whether the later violence represented a continuation of the same dispute. Police had not announced a confirmed motive.
Investigators also learned that two vehicles left the shooting scene before officers arrived. Police located both vehicles and detained several occupants for questioning. Barineau said those individuals were cooperating with detectives and providing information as investigators tried to determine what led to the shooting.
Police had not publicly characterized the detained individuals as suspects or announced charges against them. Their detention allowed detectives to conduct interviews while comparing individual accounts with evidence collected from the scene and other information gathered during the investigation.
Surveillance video is another focus of the inquiry. Investigators were looking for recordings that could show activity in the neighborhood before the shooting, capture the incident itself or document vehicles and people leaving afterward. Police said additional video could help them establish a clearer sequence of events.
The investigation was still in an early stage, and several major questions remained unanswered. Authorities had not publicly said who fired a weapon, whether investigators believe there was one shooter or more than one, or what specifically caused the confrontation to turn violent.
The deaths of all three men also changed the scope of the case from the initial response. Two victims were already dead when police arrived, while the third initially survived long enough to be transported for treatment. His later death left detectives investigating three fatalities connected to the same confrontation.
As of Monday, police had not announced arrests or publicly identified the victims. Detectives continued to interview people, examine the possible connection to the earlier disturbance and seek surveillance footage that could help establish what happened on Bayshore Drive.
