Louisville regulators acted after a shooting outside Dasha Barbour’s left 17-year-old Kameron Neal dead and another teen critically wounded.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville alcohol regulators issued an emergency suspension of Dasha Barbour’s alcohol license after a deadly shooting along Whiskey Row early Saturday left 17-year-old Kameron Neal dead and a 16-year-old boy critically injured.
The Louisville Metro Alcoholic Beverage Control agency issued the Emergency Suspension Order for the business at 217 E. Main St. after investigators preliminarily determined the shooting was directly related to operations at the establishment that did not comply with its permit. The order immediately stopped the sale and service of alcohol while the matter remained under administrative review.
The shooting was reported around 1:30 a.m. Saturday in the 200 block of East Main Street near Brook Street. Louisville Metro Police officers found Neal suffering from gunshot wounds, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Police also found a 16-year-old boy who had been shot and transported him to UofL Hospital in critical condition.
The Louisville Metro Police Homicide Unit is investigating what led to the gunfire. Police had not publicly identified a suspect, announced an arrest or disclosed a motive in the latest available reporting. The ABC action concerns the establishment’s alcohol license and does not by itself establish criminal responsibility for the shooting.
The deadly incident unfolded during an already violent overnight period in Louisville. About two hours earlier, officers responded to a separate shooting in the 1000 block of Esquire Alley in the Russell neighborhood. Four people were wounded there, including another 16-year-old boy.
The other victims in the Russell shooting were a 53-year-old woman and two men, ages 28 and 29. All four were taken to UofL Hospital, and police said their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. The department’s Non-Fatal Shooting Unit is handling that investigation.
Police said several people were believed to have been present when the Russell shooting occurred and could have information useful to investigators. No arrests had been announced in that case. Authorities have not said the Russell and Whiskey Row shootings are connected.
The suspension at Dasha Barbour’s represents the most immediate government action publicly reported after the Whiskey Row shooting. Under the emergency order, the establishment cannot sell or serve alcoholic beverages while the regulatory process moves forward. Further administrative action will depend on the agency’s review.
The shooting also drew concern from Metro Councilman Ken Herndon, who pointed to the presence of teenagers in both overnight incidents and raised broader concerns about access to firearms among young people. Herndon said additional community resources and youth programs are needed to give young people alternatives to violence.
The homicide investigation and the alcohol-license proceeding remained ongoing. Police had not announced an arrest in Neal’s death as of the latest available reporting, while Louisville Metro ABC continued its review of the Whiskey Row establishment.
