16-Year-Old Shot Dead in Greensboro Neighborhood, Police Say

Neighbors said the killing deepened fears about youth violence.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A Wednesday night shooting on Lynhaven Drive killed 16-year-old Malachi Holmes and left another person injured, police said.

The shooting happened just before 9:30 p.m. in the 3500 block of Lynhaven Drive. Greensboro police said officers arrived with Greensboro Fire and Guilford County EMS and found two people who had been shot.

Holmes was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency crews tried to save him. Police said the second victim was taken to a local hospital by ambulance. Officials have not released that person’s identity.

Investigators have not said what started the shooting. They also have not announced an arrest or released suspect information. Police described the case as an active homicide investigation.

The killing comes as residents in the neighborhood voice concern about violence involving young people. Neighbors told WFMY News 2 they want answers and a stronger sense of safety after the gunfire.

Greensboro police said Holmes’ death is the city’s 13th homicide of the year. Detectives said updates will be released when more details are available.
