16-Year-Old Dies After Shooting Erupts at Norfolk High School

The school community returned Thursday with additional support after two 16-year-old students were shot during dismissal Wednesday.

NORFOLK, Va. — Norview High School was bringing in additional counselors, police officers and security personnel Thursday after a shooting during the previous afternoon’s dismissal left one 16-year-old student dead and another injured.

Norfolk Public Schools announced the added support as police continued investigating what authorities described as a confrontation involving juveniles on school property. The shooting occurred Wednesday afternoon near the northwest portion of the Norview High School property, according to the school division. Police said officers were called to the 6800 block of Sewells Point Road at about 2:25 p.m.

Officers found two 16-year-old males suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were taken to a hospital. Police initially described one student’s injuries as life-threatening and the other’s as non-life-threatening. The critically injured teenager was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, police said.

Norfolk Police Chief Mark Talbot said the two students had been approached in the high school’s parking lot by another group of juveniles before someone pulled out a gun and shot them. Police said investigators believed they knew who they were looking for and were working to locate that person. Authorities had not publicly announced an arrest by Thursday morning.

As the criminal investigation continued, the school division focused its immediate response on students and employees returning to campus. Norfolk Public Schools said crisis counselors, psychologists, school counselors and other support personnel would be available throughout the day and beyond for those affected by the shooting.

School officials also planned to begin Thursday by meeting with faculty members so employees would be prepared to support students and one another. Additional Norfolk police officers, school resource officers and security personnel were expected to arrive before the instructional day and remain at the building until students were dismissed.

The district said Norfolk police and Norfolk Public Schools Security were working together on the investigation. School officials said some information would not be released while the investigation remained active and while authorities sought to protect the privacy of the students and families involved.

Wednesday’s response extended beyond Norview High School. Nearby Norview Middle School experienced a delayed dismissal while police handled the shooting investigation, according to reporting from the scene. The gunfire came around the time students were leaving the high school, placing the incident directly within the school’s dismissal period.

Police had not released the name of the student who died or announced a motive as of Thursday morning. The department said the shooting remained under investigation, while the school division continued providing additional security and emotional support on campus.
