Christine Bogarty was remembered as a devoted young mother as police investigated her fatal shooting in Old Brooklyn.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — A 15-year-old mother killed in a shooting in Cleveland’s Old Brooklyn neighborhood was remembered by a friend for the attention she gave her young child as police continued investigating her death.
Cleveland police identified the teenager as Christine Bogarty. Officers were sent to the 900 block of Spring Road at about 1:32 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, after receiving a report that someone had been shot. They found Bogarty with a gunshot wound, and Cleveland EMS pronounced her dead at the scene.
Ali Thurman, a friend of Bogarty, described the teenager as a caring person and a dedicated mother. Thurman said Bogarty kept her child with her regularly and celebrated the baby’s milestones. The comments offered a glimpse of Bogarty’s life as investigators worked to determine what led to the shooting.
Police detained two other 15-year-olds following the shooting and recovered two guns at the scene, Cleveland police Sgt. Freddy Diaz said. Authorities have not publicly identified the detained teenagers or announced criminal charges in connection with Bogarty’s death.
Investigators believe Bogarty and the person suspected in the shooting knew each other, Diaz said. Police have not explained how they knew one another, and officials have not released a suspected motive or a detailed account of the events immediately before the gunfire.
The limited information released by police leaves several major questions unresolved, including who fired the fatal shot and what role, if any, each detained teenager played. Authorities also have not said whether both guns recovered at the scene were fired.
Bogarty’s age added another dimension to the loss described by those who knew her. At 15, she was both a juvenile and a parent. Thurman said Bogarty loved her baby and paid close attention to the child’s progress, remembering her as someone whose role as a mother was a central part of her daily life.
Diaz said incidents involving violence are difficult for police and expressed hope that such violence would stop. Investigators continued gathering information after officers and emergency crews responded to Spring Road on Thursday afternoon.
Police have not released further information about possible charges or additional suspects. The case remains under investigation, with authorities working to establish what happened before Bogarty was shot and whether the evidence recovered at the scene will lead to criminal charges.
