14-Year-Old Boy Found Shot To Death In South Side Alley

The teen’s former youth football program said it planned a vigil after the fatal shooting.

CHICAGO, Ill. — Chicago police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy who was found late Thursday in Gresham with multiple wounds and later died at a South Side hospital.

The shooting brought police and paramedics to the 8000 block of South Carpenter Street shortly after 11:30 p.m. Officers found the teen wounded in the body. Fire crews treated him at the scene and took him in critical condition to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he died.

Police had not said what led to the gunfire. Investigators blocked off an alley while they searched for shell casings and other evidence. Neighbors reported hearing as many as eight shots before emergency crews arrived.

The boy’s name had not been released by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. Police said Area Two detectives were handling the case. No arrests had been made, and officials had not announced a suspect or motive.

The Midwest Hawks Youth Football program said the teen had been part of its football family. In a tribute, the program said his smile, presence and impact would not be forgotten. Program officials said a vigil would be held in the next few days.

Pastor Donovan Price, a community activist who responded to the scene, said the death of a child reaches far beyond one household. “When a child is shot, there are so many, so many people affected,” Price said.

Resident Marilyn Jones said the boy’s age made the shooting especially painful. She said he was “just barely beginning to live his life,” and said hearing good things about him made the loss harder for neighbors to process.

Police said Friday that detectives were still gathering evidence and that no further details had been released. The next public update is expected from police or the medical examiner as the investigation moves forward.
