County officials are investigating the third reported child fall at the same apartment complex in less than a year.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. — A child died after falling from a high-rise apartment building in College Park on Thursday night, prompting police and county inspectors to review what happened at the Seven Springs Apartments on Cherry Hill Road.
Prince George’s County police said first responders were called shortly after 9 p.m. May 7 to the 9300 block of Cherry Hill Road. The child was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died. Authorities had not released the child’s name by Monday.
Officials have released few details about the moments before the fall. Local reports differed on the child’s age, with some identifying the victim as a toddler and others citing a relative who said the girl was 4. Police had not publicly confirmed the age or named the parents. Investigators said no charges were pending as of the weekend.
The death drew new attention because it was at least the third reported child fall at the same complex in less than a year. Local reports said a 2-year-old fell from a sixth-floor window in November and a 3-year-old fell from a sixth-floor balcony in August. Both children survived those earlier falls.
Neighbors told local reporters that a window screen was found near the child after Thursday’s fall. FOX 5 reported that a relative said the child fell from a 10th-floor bedroom window. County officials have not publicly confirmed the exact window, the condition of the screen or whether any building violation played a role.
The Prince George’s County Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement said it is reviewing Thursday’s death and the two earlier falls. Officials said the apartments were built in the late 1960s, when building codes differed from current rules. The agency did not announce enforcement action by Monday.
The complex sits along Cherry Hill Road near the University of Maryland area, a corridor with several apartment buildings, student housing and family residences. Police and county inspectors are expected to examine the apartment unit, window area and prior incident records as part of the review.
The case remained open Monday. Police had not announced charges, and county officials had not released a public inspection finding tied to the fatal fall.
