Police say the incident happened in the afternoon near South Braeswood.
HOUSTON, Texas — A woman was killed in a shooting Saturday afternoon on Fondren Road in southwest Houston, prompting a homicide investigation and a heavy police presence in the area, authorities said.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire shortly before 4 p.m. and found the woman suffering from gunshot wounds in a parking lot near a busy stretch of the roadway. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said another individual at the location was also injured, possibly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, though details remained under investigation.
According to dispatch information, the call came in at approximately 3:57 p.m., bringing officers and emergency crews to the scene within minutes. Investigators said early information suggests the shooting may have involved more than one person, but authorities have not confirmed the nature of the incident or whether it stemmed from a dispute. “We are in the early stages and working through witness statements and physical evidence,” an officer at the scene said.
The area around Fondren Road and South Braeswood was cordoned off for several hours as crime scene investigators documented evidence and spoke with witnesses. Police vehicles lined the street, and yellow tape blocked access to parts of the parking lot where the shooting occurred. Nearby businesses were impacted as officers redirected traffic and restricted access while the investigation unfolded.
Officials have not released the identity of the victim, and it was unclear Saturday evening whether the second individual was expected to survive. Police also have not said whether they are searching for additional suspects or if all involved parties have been accounted for. Detectives are reviewing surveillance video from surrounding properties and canvassing the area for additional witnesses.
Southwest Houston has experienced several violent incidents in recent years, though investigators have not indicated whether Saturday’s shooting is connected to any prior cases. Residents and workers in the area described the location as a busy corridor with steady foot and vehicle traffic, particularly in the late afternoon when the shooting occurred.
Authorities said determining the relationship between those involved, if any, will be a key part of the investigation. They are also working to establish a clear timeline of events leading up to the gunfire. Officials emphasized that many details remain unconfirmed and could change as the investigation progresses.
People who were nearby at the time reported hearing multiple shots before seeing emergency responders arrive. Some said they initially thought the sounds were unrelated until police began securing the scene. “There were sirens everywhere within minutes,” one witness said, describing the rapid response.
Police said the case remains open, and additional information is expected once detectives complete preliminary interviews and forensic analysis. Officials have not announced when the next update will be provided but said the investigation is ongoing.
