Witness Says Ex Shot Boyfriend Before Fleeing Ghent Scene

Tony Camarillo’s girlfriend says her former partner shot him as detectives continue a homicide investigation spanning Norfolk and York County.

NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk police are searching for a 30-year-old Seaford man wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of Tony L. Camarillo in Ghent, while Camarillo’s girlfriend says she witnessed her former partner shoot him Wednesday night.

Police identified Skyler R. Brock, 30, as a person wanted in connection with the active homicide investigation. Authorities have not announced criminal charges against Brock or publicly said they have determined who fired the shot. Police said Friday that the investigation remained active and continued to list Brock as wanted.

Officers were dispatched to Colley Avenue near Spotswood Avenue at about 8:10 p.m. Aug. 12 after receiving a report of a gunshot victim. They found Camarillo, 31, of Norfolk, with a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to Norfolk police.

Police have described the shooting as domestic-related but have released few details about what investigators believe led to it. Jaida Garrison, Camarillo’s girlfriend, told 13News Now that Brock was her former boyfriend and the father of her child. She accused Brock of shooting Camarillo and said she was present when the shooting occurred. Her account is a witness allegation and has not been announced by police as an established finding.

The shooting unfolded along a busy part of Colley Avenue in Ghent, a neighborhood lined with restaurants, shops and other businesses. Crime scene tape went up Wednesday night as investigators worked along the street. By Thursday, businesses had reopened and normal pedestrian traffic had returned to the area.

The search for Brock extended beyond Norfolk. Police said they believed he could be in the Seaford area of York County. Law enforcement activity was seen in Seaford Thursday morning, and a shelter-in-place notice was issued there before later being lifted. Authorities did not publicly confirm that the law enforcement activity was directly connected to the search for Brock.

The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office also circulated information about Brock as agencies worked to locate him. Authorities have asked anyone with current information about his whereabouts to contact law enforcement. Police have not released information indicating that Brock has been taken into custody.

Camarillo was known in Hampton Roads as a filmmaker, musician and artist. He and Garrison had collaborated on local creative projects, including a monthly arts program. On the night he was killed, Camarillo was headed to the Naro theater for a screening connected to a short film the couple had produced, according to people involved in the Hampton Roads 48 Hour Film Project.

Norfolk police have not released additional evidence from the homicide investigation, including any surveillance video, forensic findings or detailed account of the moments before the shooting. They also have not publicly announced a specific criminal charge against Brock. The distinction leaves the case in an investigative stage as detectives continue gathering evidence and seeking him for questioning in connection with Camarillo’s death.

As of Friday morning, Norfolk police continued to identify Brock as wanted in the active investigation and said he could be in the Seaford area. Camarillo’s death remains under investigation as a homicide.
