Friends and neighbors remembered Dawn Myers as caring and mild-mannered while investigators continued a homicide case against her husband.
BRISTOL BOROUGH, Pa. — Residents of a close-knit Bucks County community are mourning 54-year-old Dawn Myers after authorities said she was killed inside her Wood Street home and charged her husband with criminal homicide and related offenses.
Michael Myers, 59, was arrested Aug. 13 after police found Dawn Myers dead in an upstairs bedroom at the couple’s home. The case has drawn attention not only because of the homicide charge but also because neighbors described a family they had known for years and said the death was difficult to reconcile with their everyday encounters.
Several people who spoke with local reporters remembered Dawn Myers as kind and willing to help others. Bristol Borough Council member Ralph DiGuiseppe described her as mild-mannered and said she never had a bad word about anyone. Sharon Lalli of Bristol recalled Dawn Myers as a person who cared about people around her. Other residents said the couple were familiar faces at the St. Ann’s church carnival.
Donny Petolillo, owner of Cesare’s Restaurante, said Michael Myers had done painting work for him and that the news came as a shock. Other neighbors also described the couple as friendly and well-known locally, although one resident who declined to be identified told 6abc that she had known Michael Myers to be combative.
The investigation began early Aug. 13 at the couple’s home on the 1300 block of Wood Street. According to a probable cause affidavit, police initially responded at about 6:09 a.m. to a residential security alarm. Officers found the home locked and saw no signs of forced entry. They returned at about 6:28 a.m. after receiving a report of a possible deceased person.
Dawn Myers’ son told investigators that he found his mother in a second-floor bedroom. Police said officers found her with multiple men’s neckties around her neck, and authorities have described her death as a strangulation. Her husband was taken into custody at the scene and later charged with criminal homicide, strangulation, aggravated assault, intimidation of witnesses or victims, possession of an instrument of crime and false imprisonment.
The affidavit also describes circumstances involving Michael Myers’ mental health in the days before Dawn Myers died. Her son told investigators that Myers had recently been hospitalized after threatening suicide and was released Aug. 12. The son said his mother told him the hospital had characterized Myers as a low threat. Authorities have not publicly said that the hospitalization caused or explains Dawn Myers’ death, and no motive has been announced.
The disclosure prompted some residents to raise broader questions about mental health care. Lalli told 6abc that she believed more work was needed on mental health services. The criminal case, however, remains focused on the evidence gathered by Bristol Borough police and Bucks County detectives, including witness statements, home security records and camera footage.
Investigators said Ring footage showed Dawn and Michael Myers at the home on Aug. 12 and showed no one entering or leaving after Dawn Myers was recorded in the backyard at 6:41 p.m. until Michael Myers walked out the front door shortly after 6 a.m. Aug. 13. Police also said they documented injuries on Myers when he was detained. Those assertions are part of the prosecution’s allegations and have not been proven at trial.
District Attorney Joe Khan called Dawn Myers’ death an unimaginable tragedy and offered condolences to her family. Police Chief Joe Moors thanked borough officers, county detectives and prosecutors for their work on the case. Authorities have not released a possible motive.
Michael Myers was arraigned Aug. 14 and sent to the Bucks County Correctional Facility without bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 26. Until the charges are resolved in court, Myers is presumed innocent.
