West Philadelphia Stabbing Turns Deadly as Housemate Faces Murder Charge

Relatives described Burton as a music-loving, gentle man as police investigated his death and charged another resident with murder.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Relatives of Mark Burton are remembering the 53-year-old West Philadelphia man for his gentle nature and love of music after he was found fatally stabbed in a shared home, a killing that triggered a SWAT response and ended with another resident facing a murder charge.

Burton was found inside a residence on the unit block of North Edgewood Street after Philadelphia police were called shortly after 9 a.m. Oct. 15. Police said officers responding to a report of a person with a weapon found Burton suffering from multiple stab wounds. Medics pronounced him dead at 9:19 a.m.

While homicide detectives worked to determine what led to the stabbing, Burton’s family focused on the person they lost. His cousin, Cyrell Green, described Burton in interviews with local news organizations as peaceful and family-oriented. Green said Burton loved music and was the kind of person who would not hurt others.

Family members also said Burton had endured significant personal loss before his death, including the deaths of his father and brother within the past two years. His killing brought another period of grief to relatives who said they never expected a disagreement inside the shared residence to end in violence.

Relatives told FOX 29 that Burton lived in a shared home and believed the person police took into custody was one of his housemates. They said the two men had disagreements during the previous year. Police, however, have not publicly said those disagreements caused the fatal encounter, and investigators have not announced a motive.

The police response quickly expanded after officers arrived. Authorities said a man was inside a locked second-floor bedroom, prompting officers to declare a barricade and summon the SWAT Unit. Other local reports said two women were able to get out of the home safely during the confrontation.

The barricade ended when SWAT officers took the man into custody without incident, police said. No additional injuries were reported. The operation brought a heavy police presence to the residential neighborhood while investigators remained at the scene for hours gathering information about the stabbing and events that followed.

Police later identified the man taken into custody as 52-year-old Marvis Davis, who also lived on the unit block of North Edgewood Street. Authorities said Davis has been charged with murder and related offenses in Burton’s death. The charges are allegations, and they do not establish guilt.

Several questions remain unanswered, including what occurred inside the residence before police were called and what investigators believe led to the stabbing. Authorities have not publicly released a detailed sequence of the encounter or announced a motive. The Philadelphia Police Department’s Homicide Unit continues to investigate.

For Burton’s relatives, the case now moves forward alongside their grief. Their public comments have emphasized his personality and family ties while police and prosecutors handle the criminal case stemming from his death.
