Volunteer Firefighter Trevor Brown Honored with Candlelight Vigil in Sterling

Sterling, Virginia – A year after the tragic explosion that claimed the life of volunteer firefighter Trevor Brown and injured 13 others, a community in Sterling is coming together to honor his memory with a candlelight vigil.

The memorial event is set to take place on Sunday, February 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the site of the home where the explosion occurred. The space is currently being transformed into a passive park, with an expected opening date of July 26. This vigil aims to provide an opportunity for first responders, community members, and local leaders to reflect on Brown’s service, bravery, and ultimate sacrifice in protecting the Sterling community.

Attendees at the vigil can expect a moment of silence, speeches from local officials, and a communal lighting of candles to symbolize remembrance and unity. The event is open to the public, with candles provided on site. Participants are advised to dress warmly for the outdoor gathering, with parking available at nearby Seneca Ridge Middle School or Dominion High School.

Brown, a dedicated volunteer firefighter with the Sterling Volunteer Fire Company, had been part of the fire-rescue system since 2016. He leaves behind his wife, Laura, and three children. The initial incident occurred on February 16, when firefighters responded to a gas leak at a residence on Silver Ridge Drive. Unfortunately, the home exploded shortly after their arrival, resulting in multiple injuries to first responders.

Following Brown’s tragic passing, a funeral service was held on March 4, with thousands in attendance to pay their respects. Governor Glenn Younkin and County Chair Phyllis J. Randall (D-At Large) paid tribute to Brown’s heroism and service to the community. The explosion was later determined to have been caused by a leak from a buried propane tank on the property, leading to charges against a former Southern States employee for manslaughter.

As the community gathers to remember and honor Trevor Brown, the vigil serves as a somber yet meaningful tribute to his legacy and the sacrifices made by first responders in Sterling. For more information on the memorial park being established in Brown’s honor, visit ffbrownmemorialpark.com.
