MILWAUKEE — The tragic shooting of a teenager, which left a community grieving, has reignited discussions on public safety and police accountability. Alderman Mark Chambers Jr. expressed his frustration over the shooting death of his 16-year-old nephew, Marquis Champion, asserting that it could have been prevented had law enforcement acted on existing warrants for the suspect.
Martell Haire, 23, is facing charges in connection with the shooting that occurred on October 20, when an argument arose inside a home near 79th Street and Hampton Avenue. During this confrontation, Haire allegedly shot three teenagers, resulting in Champion’s death. Criminal records indicate that at the time of the incident Haire had two open warrants, one related to a child sexual assault investigation dating back nearly two years.
Chambers stated that the community’s failure to report Haire’s ongoing issues contributed to this tragedy. “It’s frustrating, honestly, because there were people supporting this individual,” he said. “We need to get back to that community mindset of ‘if you see something, say something.’” He believes that a stronger communal vigilance could have kept Haire from being free prior to this incident.
The police involvement in Haire’s case has brought renewed scrutiny to their handling of ongoing investigations. Advocates are calling for more proactive measures to address situations involving individuals with outstanding warrants. Chambers reiterated the need for increased accountability within both the community and law enforcement.
In addition to the ongoing investigation related to the shooting, Haire faces separate charges from a disorderly conduct incident last summer where he allegedly threatened another person with a firearm. Chambers urged the community to remain vigilant and supportive, emphasizing the importance of prayer for the recovery of the two other teenagers injured in the shooting.
Authorities are actively seeking information regarding Haire’s whereabouts. Crime Stoppers has announced a reward of $25,000 for tips leading to Haire’s arrest, an effort aimed at encouraging those with knowledge of his location to come forward. Individuals can reach out to Milwaukee police at (414) 935-7360 or provide anonymous tips via Crime Stoppers at (414) 224-TIPS.
This tragic incident has highlighted broader issues of violence, community safety, and the necessity for collaborative action to prevent future occurrences. As the investigation continues, the community remains in mourning while seeking justice for the loss of a beloved young life.
