Ibeju Lekki, Nigeria — An escalating family feud over land has resulted in allegations of a violent assault that has left one brother hospitalized and questioning his safety. Temitope Sufwan Ogungbo, the Supervisor for Education in Ibeju Lekki, stands accused of leading the attack against his brother, Israel Balogun, amid a bitter dispute over a property inherited from their late father.
The conflict began as a disagreement over land boundaries but quickly spiraled into a harrowing situation marked by betrayal and violence. According to Israel, Temitope attempted to sell the land against their father’s wishes, prompting Israel to voice his opposition. “I told him that if he wanted to sell, he could do so with his part, but I would not give up mine,” Israel explained.
In response to his refusal, Israel alleges that Temitope resorted to intimidation, openly threatening violence and involving local thugs in his plans. “He said he would bring the ‘area boys’ to fence the land, regardless of my objections,” Israel recalled. The situation escalated further when, after a series of confrontations, Temitope allegedly orchestrated an armed attack on Israel with the help of hired thugs.
The attack left Israel with severe injuries, requiring hospitalization. “They came at night and stabbed me multiple times,” he recounted. The fear evident in his voice illustrates the physical and emotional toll this family dispute has taken. Now, lying in a hospital bed surrounded by bandages, Israel reflects on the trauma of being betrayed by someone he believed should have been a protector.
Despite the violence and intimidation he has faced, Israel attempted to seek justice by reporting the threats to local authorities. However, his efforts were met with further challenges. “I was sent from one police station to another, and when I returned home, I was attacked again,” he said. This series of events has fostered a deep sense of dread, with Israel expressing concerns over his safety and a lack of faith in the authorities meant to protect him.
Adding to his distress is the recent birth of twins to his wife, which only magnifies his fears as he battles both physical injuries and psychological scars. “I feel helpless. It’s like there’s no one I can turn to,” he lamented. Israel has made a desperate appeal for support, urging the public to recognize the perilous situation he finds himself in while fearing the influence that Temitope wields over local law enforcement.
Threats of violence have reportedly been a pattern for Temitope, raising concerns about his unchecked power and its implications for the community. Israel’s plight highlights a broader issue of familial conflict turned violent—a testament to the struggles faced by many in areas where power dynamics can lead to severe consequences.
Amidst this turmoil, attempts to reach Temitope for comment have been unsuccessful, and inquiries to local law enforcement have yielded no immediate responses. As Israel continues to recover from his injuries, he remains determined to raise awareness of his situation and the urgent need for assistance in his fight for justice.
