Guharu, India — What began as a festive wedding procession on May 7 turned tragic when violence erupted in Guharu village, located in the Gurua police station area of Gaya district. A group of local men reportedly assaulted participants, resulting in the death of an elderly man and leaving several others injured.
The procession, celebrating the union of the Yadav family, was attended by members of the Mahadalit community who also faced brutal attacks. This incident has heightened fears among Dalit residents, raising concerns about their safety and communal tensions in the area.
Witnesses reported that around 9:30 PM, as Mithilesh Yadav’s wedding procession made its way toward the bride’s home, violence erupted. The celebration included traditional rituals, with participants dancing and enjoying music. However, to avoid conflict near a nearby mosque, the procession organizers chose to stop the music well before arriving in that area. The atmosphere quickly turned hostile when a mob launched an aggressive attack on the returning procession members.
Sunaina Devi, a local resident, provided a detailed account in her police complaint, identifying numerous individuals involved in the assault. She claimed that derogatory remarks were directed at the Dalit community, escalating tensions and leading to violence. During the attack, her blouse was torn, and she was physically assaulted, while support from other women provoked further aggression from the mob.
The violent encounter not only resulted in injuries but also led to property damage, with the assailants allegedly stealing valuables and issuing threats to the Dalit community. Tragically, Ramvriksh Yadav, the groom’s father, was beaten to death amid the chaos, yet local reports indicate that this critical detail was not included in the initial police filing, raising allegations of a cover-up.
Residents described Guharu as a village marked by rising communal tensions, where Hindu families are significantly outnumbered by their Muslim counterparts. Community members have voiced fears about their safety and the increasing pressure to conform to local religious customs, which they feel imposes restrictions on their cultural and religious practices.
