Katni, India — A violent incident unfolded at the Bakal police station late Wednesday night when a mob of 30 to 40 individuals attacked officers and vandalized property. This eruption of chaos followed a day of protests organized by the Karni Sena, which had drawn attention to local grievances.
During the assault, two policemen suffered injuries, with one receiving severe wounds. Head Constable Awadhesh Mishra and Constable KK Shukla were on duty when the attackers confronted them, leading to a physical altercation. Local law enforcement quickly intervened to restore order, but the situation escalated rapidly.
In the aftermath, officers Mishra and Shukla were transported to Bahoriband Hospital for immediate medical care. Given the extent of Shukla’s injuries, he was later moved to Dharmalok Hospital in Katni for further treatment, prompting a visit from Superintendent of Police Abhinay Vishwakarma, who aimed to assess the situation and ensure proper security measures were implemented in the area.
The tensions leading to this violence stem from a recent incident involving the alleged abduction and assault of a local youth, Kunal Singh Rajput, on October 19. Following the event, the police arrested the alleged perpetrators, Asim Khan and Amil Khan. However, local community members claimed that law enforcement mishandled the case, escalating frustrations within the community.
On Wednesday, these frustrations culminated in a large protest where members of the Karni Sena, along with various Hindu organizations and local residents, demanded accountability from police officials, specifically calling for the suspension of the local station in-charge. Protesters blocked roads and vocally expressed their dissatisfaction with the police response to the abduction case.
After the protest concluded, a faction of the demonstrators returned to the police station later that night, leading to the violent confrontation. In response, authorities deployed an increased number of security personnel in and around Bakal to prevent further unrest. District officials confirmed that the situation is now under control but remain vigilant for any potential flare-ups.
In light of the assault on police personnel, authorities have filed charges against the attackers for rioting, unlawful assembly, and assaulting public servants. Investigations are ongoing, with police analyzing CCTV footage and gathering eyewitness accounts to identify individuals involved in the attack.
The events in Bakal have highlighted ongoing tensions within the community, underscoring the need for greater dialogue between local residents and law enforcement to address grievances before they escalate into violence.
