Vigil in Queens Honors Tragically Lost Couple as Community Demands Justice for Gruesome Act of Violence

Bellerose, New York — A community came together Friday evening to honor Frank and Maureen Olton, a couple tragically killed in their home earlier this week before it was deliberately set ablaze. Attending neighbors gathered at the couple’s residence to hold a candlelight vigil, lighting candles and singing songs in a poignant display of solidarity and grief.

The 76-year-old Frank Olton and his 77-year-old wife were well-loved figures in their neighborhood, where they had raised their family. Frank was particularly involved in local affairs, serving as a prominent member of the Bellerose Commonwealth Civic Association. His knowledge and experience made him a go-to person for community information, according to fellow member Lourdes Villanueva Hartrick.

Residents expressed shock and sorrow over the heinous crime. “It’s just such senseless violence. It’s not how things are supposed to be,” neighbor Analyse Triolo-Lewis remarked, capturing the collective heartbreak felt throughout the community. As the vigil unfolded, Borough President Donovan Richards acknowledged the broader implications of the tragedy, stating, “This could have been any of us,” underlining the vulnerability felt by the residents.

Authorities have identified 42-year-old Jamel McGriff as the suspect in the case, and the Queens district attorney’s office has committed to pursuing justice vigorously. McGriff reportedly forced entry into the Oltons’ home, brutally assaulted Frank, left him restrained in the basement, and ignited a fire that claimed both lives. Maureen was discovered dead in the residence’s first-floor area.

Law enforcement officials captured crucial evidence that led to McGriff’s apprehension after he used the victims’ credit card to purchase a movie ticket in Union Square. Detective teams tracked his location in real-time and sent officers to the theater. “We obtained video images showing his distinctive outfit, which was quickly circulated among police,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny detailed, illustrating the swift response of law enforcement.

McGriff faces a multitude of charges, including murder, kidnapping, and arson. His criminal history is extensive, with 17 prior arrests, which include multiple robbery offenses and a recent incident involving a violent sexual assault during a robbery. At the time of the Oltons’ deaths, he was on parole after serving time for a previous robbery.

In the aftermath of this devastating event, Richards announced plans to honor the Oltons by renaming 254th Street in their memory. This gesture aims to not only commemorate the couple’s legacy but also to unite the community in the face of such senseless violence. As news of the tragedy continues to ripple through Bellerose, residents are determined to rally around one another, seeking solace and strength during this dark time.
