Veteran Killed After Walmart Parking Space Argument, Authorities Say

Relatives said Bart Diguglielmo served in the military and worked for decades as a nurse.

NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The family of Bart Diguglielmo is mourning the 62-year-old veteran and retired nurse after deputies said he was fatally shot during a parking space dispute outside a Walmart on June 30.

Diguglielmo, of Lauderhill, was shot shortly before 12:30 p.m. at the Walmart at 7900 W. McNab Road. Broward sheriff’s officials said a woman involved in the argument remained at the scene, cooperated with detectives and claimed self-defense.

Family members described Diguglielmo as a father of three who had served in the military and later worked in health care. His daughter, Amanda, told Local 10 News that she wanted her father remembered for who he was, not only for the final moments of his life.

“He’s not perfect, but not someone that would do this to this extreme,” Amanda said, disputing claims about his conduct before the shooting. She said the family had been working to repair relationships and that his death had left relatives in shock.

A sister who spoke with CBS Miami said Diguglielmo was a decorated military veteran who served during Desert Storm and later worked as a nurse for 30 years. She called the shooting “just heartbreaking” and said he was “a very good person.”

The shooting remains under investigation. Sheriff’s officials have not released the woman’s name and have not announced charges. Detectives said the case will be presented to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office after the investigation is complete.

The parking lot shooting drew attention after video of the confrontation spread online. Authorities have said the argument began over a parking space, but they have not released a full account of what happened before the shot was fired.

As of July 4, the woman had not been charged. The next step is a review by prosecutors, who will decide whether the evidence supports criminal charges in Diguglielmo’s death.
