Investigators say the accused man fled in a stolen car after a child witnessed the fatal shooting.
IMMOKALEE, Fla. — A man accused of fatally shooting two women inside an Immokalee home was arrested in Lehigh Acres less than two hours after deputies were called to the residence, authorities said.
Lorenzo Coleman, 25, is charged with two counts of second-degree murder with a firearm, child abuse and grand theft auto. A Collier County judge ordered him held without bond on the murder charges during his first court appearance Tuesday.
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a home on North Ninth Street at about 8:34 a.m. Friday, July 10, after receiving a report of a possible shooting. Deputies found two women dead inside the home.
Authorities identified one of the women as 25-year-old Eliza Torres. The second victim was 29, but officials had not released her name as of Wednesday while efforts continued to notify or reach her family.
Investigators said Coleman knew both women and left the scene in a white Dodge Challenger as deputies were responding. The vehicle had been reported stolen, according to authorities, leading to the grand theft auto charge.
Collier County deputies began searching for Coleman with assistance from the agency’s aviation unit. At about 10 a.m., Lee County deputies detained him after responding to a reported disturbance on Lone Star Lane in Lehigh Acres.
The child abuse charge stems from investigators’ allegation that a child witnessed the shooting. Authorities have not released the child’s age, name or relationship to the people involved.
During Coleman’s first appearance, prosecutors asked Judge Deborah Cunningham to keep him jailed without bond on both murder counts. Cunningham approved the request pending a pretrial detention hearing.
The judge set a $50,000 bond on the child abuse charge and a $25,000 bond on the vehicle theft charge. She also prohibited Coleman from contacting the victims’ families and imposed possible GPS monitoring and firearm restrictions if he is released later.
The sheriff’s office has not announced a suspected motive or released a detailed account of what led to the shooting. Coleman is accused of the crimes and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
He remained in the Collier County Jail as the homicide investigation and court proceedings continued.
