Customers began leaving as an argument escalated before gunfire wounded two 20-year-old men inside the Camden County store.
SICKLERVILLE, N.J. — Customers and employees escaped physical injury when a dispute erupted into gunfire inside a Camden County Wawa, where two 20-year-old men were shot as several other people were in the store Sunday night, authorities said.
The shooting occurred shortly after 9 p.m. at the Wawa on the 400 block of Sicklerville Road in Winslow Township. Authorities said about five to 10 customers and at least three employees were inside when a verbal altercation intensified. Some customers began leaving before shots were fired.
Police responding to the store found one 20-year-old man with a gunshot wound. He was taken to Cooper University Hospital in stable condition. A second 20-year-old man later arrived with a gunshot wound at Jefferson Hospital in Washington Township and was subsequently transferred to Cooper, according to authorities.
No Wawa employees or customers were physically injured, a point authorities emphasized as they investigated how the confrontation escalated in an occupied business. Police have not released the names of the wounded men or provided a detailed account of the circumstances that led to the dispute.
The shooting left some Sicklerville residents worried about the risk to people who had no connection to the confrontation. Resident Tom Conaway told 6abc that children could have been inside and expressed concern about the danger gunfire could pose to anyone nearby. Gloria Marquez, another resident, said the incident made ordinary nighttime errands feel frightening.
The store closed overnight as investigators worked at the scene and professional crews carried out cleanup. It reopened at about 6 a.m. Monday, returning to business hours while the criminal investigation continued.
Police are examining surveillance video from the store. Authorities said everyone involved in the incident has been identified and that they do not believe the shooting poses an ongoing threat to the wider public. No arrests or charges had been announced in the latest update.
The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office and Winslow Township police are investigating. Officials have not said whether a firearm was recovered, how many shots were fired or whether either wounded man is expected to face charges. Authorities also have not disclosed the condition of the second man in their latest public statements.
The investigation remained active Tuesday. Police have described the shooting as the result of an escalating verbal altercation but have not announced a more specific motive or released additional details about the events leading to the gunfire.
