Police say Yoriel Cabrera tried to leave the Crowley Road scene before he was detained following the early-morning collision.
FORT WORTH, Texas — A 22-year-old man has been charged after Fort Worth police said two adults were seriously injured by a vehicle on Crowley Road and the driver tried to leave the scene before being detained.
Yoriel Cabrera faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and intoxication assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury, according to Fort Worth police. Officers responded shortly after 12:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, to the 5700 block of Crowley Road after receiving a report of a hit-and-run. Police found two injured adults, later identified as Tiffany Chapman, 48, and Dione Gusman, 32.
Both victims were taken to a hospital in serious condition. Police said Cabrera attempted to leave the scene but was detained. Authorities have not publicly released a full arrest affidavit detailing the evidence supporting the charges, leaving some elements of the investigation unclear in the initial reports.
Cabrera drew additional attention because his Tarrant County Jail booking photograph showed blood on his face. Fort Worth police spokesman Bradley C. Perez told CBS News Texas that Cabrera reported receiving his injuries from people he had been playing pool with before the crash. Perez said he knew Cabrera had injuries but did not know whether any additional injuries occurred when Cabrera was detained.
Police have not publicly connected the blood visible in the booking photograph to Chapman or Gusman. The available reports also do not establish precisely how Cabrera’s earlier injuries occurred. Authorities have attributed the account of the pool-hall encounter to Cabrera.
Chapman later told FOX 4 that she and friends had noticed Cabrera stumbling toward his vehicle outside a pool hall before the collision. She said she heard screeching tires and saw headlights coming toward her moments before she was struck. Her account has not been presented as a final police finding about the sequence of events.
Chapman suffered two broken legs along with a punctured and collapsed lung, she said. She underwent surgery and said plates and screws were placed in her right knee. She also said Gusman was thrown about 20 feet and knocked unconscious. Police initially described both victims’ conditions as serious.
The criminal charges against Cabrera remain allegations and do not establish guilt. Court information cited by FOX 4 showed that he posted bond and was released from the Tarrant County Jail on Sept. 21, two days after the crash.
Additional details about the police investigation, including a fuller account of what happened immediately before the vehicle struck the two victims, had not been released in the reports available Tuesday. The case remains pending as authorities continue the legal process and the injured victims recover.
