Two Children Inside as Indianapolis Mother Dies in Murder-Suicide

Gyana Marie Martin, 26, was found dead with a 34-year-old man inside a northwest Indianapolis apartment Thursday morning.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — A 26-year-old mother of two was killed Thursday morning in what Indianapolis police are investigating as an apparent murder-suicide inside an apartment on the city’s northwest side.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called shortly after 8 a.m. Oct. 22 to the Colonial Square Apartments in the 4400 block of Moller Road on a report of a person shot. Officers entered the apartment and found a man and a woman dead. The Marion County Coroner’s Office later identified them as Gyana Marie Martin, 26, and Kenneth Keon Williams Jr., 34.

Investigators believe Williams killed Martin before dying by suicide, according to police accounts reported by local news organizations. Authorities recovered two firearms from the apartment. Police have not publicly identified a motive or released a detailed account of what happened before officers were called, and investigators have not disclosed the nature of Martin and Williams’ relationship.

Martin’s two young children were inside the apartment when the deaths occurred, police said. Authorities did not publicly release the children’s ages or provide details about what they may have seen or heard. The children were not physically injured, according to local reports. Police emphasized that the effects of the deaths extended beyond the two adults found inside the home.

Family members who gathered near the apartment remembered Martin as a devoted mother who was building a future for herself and her children. Relatives told local reporters that she was studying to become a nurse and had recently secured a job at IU Health. Her cousin, Sharron Banks, described Martin as loving and deeply committed to her children.

The deaths brought investigators and first responders to Colonial Square, a residential complex near Moller Road and West 46th Street. Officers secured the area while homicide detectives and forensic personnel worked to document the scene and recover evidence. Police have not announced evidence suggesting another person was involved.

The case came only days after two other Indianapolis incidents that authorities determined or described as murder-suicides. On Oct. 14, Heather Ann Staniszeski, 42, and her brother, Brian Jacob Staniszeski, 30, were found dead after officers went to a Discovery Drive home for a welfare check. The Marion County Coroner’s Office ruled Heather Staniszeski’s death a homicide and Brian Staniszeski’s death a suicide.

Five days later, police found 33-year-old Shatayvia Alisha Calderon and her 9-year-old son, Julian Calderon, dead from gunshot wounds at a northwest Indianapolis condominium. Investigators later said they believed Calderon killed her son before dying by suicide. The Oct. 22 deaths of Martin and Williams marked the third such case reported in Indianapolis in just over a week.

Police have been cautious about assigning explanations to the Moller Road deaths while the investigation continues. Authorities have not announced evidence establishing why the violence occurred, and no publicly released information has established whether there had been prior calls for service involving Martin or Williams. Detectives are continuing to review evidence gathered from the apartment.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office is responsible for formally determining the cause and manner of each death. Police continued to describe the Moller Road case as an apparent murder-suicide as of Friday, with no indication of an ongoing threat to the surrounding community.
