Troopers Ambushed in Susquehanna County: Two State Police Officers Hospitalized After Violent Incident; Community in Shock

SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY, Pa. — A tragic incident unfolded Thursday morning in northeastern Pennsylvania, where two state troopers were shot while responding to a welfare check, following the fatal shooting of a local woman by her neighbor. According to Pennsylvania State Police, 57-year-old Lori Wasko was shot outside her home on State Route 171 around 11 a.m. Her boyfriend alerted authorities, prompting the response from law enforcement.

As Troopers Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins arrived at the scene, they were ambushed by gunfire from 61-year-old Carmine Faino, who had been armed with a rifle. Police said that both troopers suffered serious injuries and were subsequently airlifted to a nearby medical facility. Faino was killed during the encounter.

During a press conference held later in the evening, state police confirmed that both troopers are now in stable condition but are facing a challenging recovery. The incident spurred an extensive law enforcement response, with multiple units collaborating to establish a secure perimeter around the scene. Officials have declared that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his concern and support for the troopers during a news conference in Bucks County. “Lori and I are praying for those troopers. We must stand together for their recovery,” he said. Shapiro praised the quick actions of Trooper Perechinsky, asserting that his decisive response likely saved lives that day, including those of his partner and nearby residents.

Following the governor’s remarks, he indicated plans to visit Trooper Jenkins and learn more about his condition. Meanwhile, state police are conducting an active investigation into the incident, promising to provide additional details as they become available.

Local and state lawmakers also voiced their support and concern. Congressman Dan Meuser stated he was relieved to hear of the troopers’ stable condition. “Your prayers made a difference,” he noted, while calling for swift justice for the perpetrator. Lawmakers, including U.S. Senator John Fetterman, echoed sentiments of solidarity for the injured troopers, emphasizing the importance of their bravery.

Susquehanna County, located at the northeastern edge of Pennsylvania, is known for its picturesque landscapes and outdoor recreational opportunities. Despite its rural character, the county has a population of approximately 38,000 residents and is a hub for outdoor activities like skiing and hiking in the nearby Endless Mountains, which includes Pennsylvania’s tallest peak, Elk Hill.

As details continue to emerge about this harrowing incident, the local community remains united in support for the troopers who risked their lives in the line of duty.
