Trees Fall During Maryland Storms, Killing Two Women Walking Outside

The deaths happened Thursday night in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — Two women were killed Thursday night when trees fell in separate Maryland counties as storms moved through the Washington region, authorities said Friday.

One woman died in Prince George’s County after a tree fell while she was walking in the 11700 block of North Marlton Avenue in Upper Marlboro. Another woman died on Matthew Henson Trail in Montgomery County after a tree fell and trapped her, officials said.

Prince George’s County police said the Upper Marlboro call came in about 8:40 p.m. Thursday. The woman was struck while walking in the Marlton area and was pronounced dead. In Montgomery County, fire and rescue crews were called about 9 p.m. after someone reported seeing a woman trapped under a tree along Matthew Henson Trail. Maryland-National Capital Park Police said the woman died from injuries suffered when the tree fell as she walked on the trail.

The two deaths were reported less than half an hour apart and about 40 miles from each other. Authorities had not released the names of either woman as of Friday afternoon. Park police said in a statement that their “thoughts and condolences are with the victim’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.” Officials did not report any criminal charges or suspicious circumstances in either case.

The Montgomery County incident happened near Matthew Henson State Park, off Georgia Avenue, in the Aspen Hill area. Local fire officials said crews responded to a report of an injured person near the trail. Park police officers were also called and took the lead in the investigation. In Prince George’s County, police confirmed the fatal tree fall on North Marlton Avenue, a residential road in Upper Marlboro.

The deaths came as severe storms crossed parts of Maryland, Washington and Virginia on Thursday evening. Reports across the region included downed trees, damaged power lines and storm debris. In Montgomery County, officials said the woman on the trail was found after a person called for help. In Prince George’s County, police said the woman was walking when the tree came down.

Investigators had not released a final report Friday. Officials also had not said when the women’s names would be made public. Park police said officers responded with fire and rescue crews and were reviewing the Montgomery County death. Prince George’s County police confirmed the Upper Marlboro death and said no further details were immediately available.

As of Friday afternoon, both investigations remained open, and authorities had released only limited information about the victims and the exact circumstances of the tree falls.
