Trapped in Flames: Woman Dies After Hobe Sound House Fire

State investigators are reviewing the cause of the Southeast Cactus Trail blaze.

HOBE SOUND, Fla. — One person died after a house fire Monday afternoon in Hobe Sound, where firefighters found heavy smoke pouring from a home in the 7000 block of Southeast Cactus Trail, Martin County Fire Rescue said.

The fire drew crews from Martin County Fire Rescue Station 32 just after 3 p.m. June 29. Firefighters entered the home, found an unresponsive person inside and carried the victim out. Paramedics treated the person and took the victim by ambulance to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Fire Rescue later said the person had died.

Officials said smoke was coming from all doors and windows when the first crews arrived. Stuart Fire Rescue also responded through a mutual aid agreement. The victim’s name had not been released by Tuesday morning, and officials had not said whether anyone else was inside the home when the fire started.

The State Fire Marshal was notified and is investigating the cause. Fire officials did not announce an early cause, point of origin or damage estimate. The home remained part of an active investigation as officials worked to document the scene and determine how the fire began.

The death adds to a busy stretch for Martin County emergency crews, who have responded to several fire calls in recent weeks, including brush fires elsewhere in the county. The Hobe Sound case is separate from those brush fires, and officials had not linked it to weather or any outside fire activity.

As of Tuesday, the main unanswered questions were the victim’s identity, the cause of the fire and whether smoke alarms or other safety systems were present. Investigators were expected to continue reviewing the home, witness accounts and fire patterns before releasing more findings.
