Tragic Murder-Suicide Leaves Manatee Academy Community Devastated

Port St. Lucie, Florida – The community at Manatee Academy K-8 School in Port St. Lucie came together on Sunday to create a makeshift memorial for Jamie Felix, a beloved teacher who tragically lost her life in front of her children on Friday night.

The school shared on social media that Felix had previously been honored as teacher of the year, and her husband, who police confirmed took his own life, had also been a staff member until October 2023.

Ray Felix, the husband, had worked in various roles at the school, receiving recognition as school related employee of the year twice. The district expressed their condolences, highlighting Jamie’s dedication and impact on students and staff.

Tessa Alette, one of Jamie Felix’s former students, fondly remembered her as a caring and passionate math teacher, known for her dedication and close relationships with students. Alette described Felix as the “school mom,” showcasing the impact she had beyond the classroom.

Another student shared how Jamie Felix had made a lasting impression as a great teacher who genuinely cared for her students. Alette added that Felix was not only a great educator but also a devoted mother, recounting a heartwarming story about her collecting rubber band balls for one of her children.

Court records revealed that Jamie Felix had filed for divorce and sought protection from domestic violence. While specifics were not public as of Sunday, efforts were underway to obtain and review the related documents for more information.

As the school community continues to mourn the loss of Jamie Felix, support services and counseling will be available on-site for as long as needed to help students and staff cope with this heartbreaking tragedy.

Through the makeshift memorial erected outside the school, the legacy of Jamie Felix as a dedicated teacher, loving mother, and cherished member of the school community lives on, leaving a profound impact on those she touched.
