Tragic Murder-Suicide in Luzerne County Leaves Two Dead – Ex-Partner Files Protection Order

NANTICOKE, Pa. – Police are investigating a tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of two individuals in what appears to be a murder-suicide. The authorities were called to a residence on East Union Street following reports of a shooting at approximately 8:26 p.m. Monday.

Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement found the lifeless body of a 48-year-old man, identified as Scott Richards, at the top of the stairs with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was rushed to the hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries the following day. A 43-year-old woman, Carrie Boneforte, was also found deceased in a bedroom with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.

Further investigation led to the discovery of a firearm, shell casings, and a live round of ammunition at the top of the stairs, as well as a history of a protection-from-abuse order that Boneforte had filed against Richards in 2014, which had expired in 2015. This information provides possible insight into the turbulent relationship between the two individuals.

The devastating incident has left behind four children, prompting the creation of a GoFundMe to help cover memorial costs for Boneforte. This tragedy serves as a reminder of the far-reaching impact of domestic violence and the importance of providing support for the families affected by such devastating events.

As the community mourns the loss of these individuals, it also raises questions about the effectiveness of protection orders in preventing such tragic outcomes. The investigation into this heartbreaking event continues as loved ones and the community come to grips with the aftermath of this senseless act. Such incidents serve as a call for further awareness and support for those experiencing domestic violence.
