Tragic Gas Explosion Halts Production at Hanwha Ocean Shipyard in South Korea

SEOUL, South Korea – Production at Hanwha Ocean’s Okpo shipyard has come to a halt following a fatal accident that occurred on Friday. The South Korean shipbuilder stated that the incident occurred on January 12, 2023, and production was stopped on Monday, without disclosing further details. Local reports and individuals familiar with the yard revealed that a gas explosion took place at a ship rudder fabrication shop, resulting in the death of a subcontractor employee. It is believed that a gas leak occurred during grinding work, causing the explosion and tragically killing a 28-year-old Korean worker. Police are currently investigating the circumstances of the incident.

The shipbuilder, which was previously not involved in shipbuilding, acquired shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and rebranded as Hanwha Ocean in May 2023. With the appointment of Kwon Hyek-woong as chief executive, the company embarked on a $1.5 billion exercise to expand and transform its operations. Despite initially being cautious in taking orders, the new management team has become more active in discussing new projects in recent months, according to industry insiders. Hanwha Ocean currently has contracts for over 100 vessels, primarily consisting of container ships, LNG carriers, VLACs, and naval work.

As a result of the fatal accident, production at the Geoje Island facility will resume once the investigation determines the cause of the incident and necessary precautionary measures can be implemented. The company’s commitment to safety and well-being of its workers remains a top priority as it works to overcome this tragedy and move forward with its operations.
