Bangkok, Thailand – A tragic incident unfolded in suburban Bangkok as a bus carrying young students and teachers caught fire, resulting in the loss of at least 23 lives. The devastating scene left 20 children and three teachers dead as rescuers and officials worked tirelessly to respond to the emergency.
Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungruengkit revealed that the bus, transporting a total of 44 passengers from Uthai Thani province for a school trip, was headed to Ayutthaya and Nonthaburi provinces. Shocking videos circulating on social media displayed the bus consumed by flames, shrouded in thick smoke underneath an overpass. Despite efforts, bodies remained inside the bus hours after the blaze was extinguished.
The young students onboard were primarily from elementary and junior high schools. Speculations arose as Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul mentioned that the driver, although surviving, was nowhere to be found following the incident. Identifying the bodies proved challenging for rescuers, with most located in the middle and rear seats of the bus, indicating the fire’s origins may have been at the front.
Reports from Thai media and rescuers suggested that the fire ignited in Pathum Thani province as the bus was en route to Nonthaburi. It was believed to have started following a tire explosion and subsequent impact with a road barrier. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed her sympathies, promising governmental support for medical expenses and compensation for the families affected by the tragedy.
Amidst the chaos, Rangsit Hospital near the scene disclosed the admission of three young girls, one of whom sustained severe burns to the face, mouth, and eye. The community mourns the loss of innocent lives and extends support to those grappling with the aftermath of this heartbreaking event.
