Tragic: 66-Year-Old Woman to be Charged with Second-Degree Murder in Fatal Birthday Party Crash

Monroe, Michigan – A tragic incident at the Swan Boat Club in Berlin Township has left the community reeling after a devastating crash resulting in the deaths of two young siblings, ages 4 and 8, and injuries to fifteen others. The driver, Marshella Marie Chidester, 66, faced her preliminary court appearance on Tuesday, where she was charged with two counts of second-degree murder and several counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Prosecutors argued for a $1.5 million bond for Chidester, citing evidence of severe substance abuse and the high likelihood of conviction due to video footage. Chidester’s attorney, however, presented a different picture, emphasizing her clean record, medical issues, and limited alcohol consumption prior to the crash.

During the hearing, the judge set bail at $1.5 million, reflecting the seriousness of the charges. If convicted of the murder charges, Chidester could face a maximum sentence of life in prison. The emotional impact of the tragedy was palpable as the sister of one of the young victims expressed her devastation at having to plan a funeral instead of a birthday party.

Chidester’s next court appearance is scheduled for a probable cause conference on April 30, followed by a preliminary examination on May 6. The community continues to mourn the loss of the young siblings and support those injured in the crash. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the tragic consequences of driving under the influence, highlighting the importance of responsible behavior behind the wheel.
