Tragedy Turned Hope: Sumter Family Honored at Child Abuse Awareness Event

Sumter, South Carolina – A Sumter family has been enduring the heartbreaking loss of three children who tragically lost their lives last March. The community has rallied in support, coming together to honor the family and raise awareness about child abuse issues.

Andre Rush, who has faced immense pain after the death of his 11-year-old daughter, Ava, in a murder-suicide incident, expressed the challenges of the past year. Ava, along with her two brothers, Aayden and Aason, fell victim to the violence perpetrated by their stepfather in their home. The devastating loss prompted Rush to turn his grief into a force for good by giving back to the community.

In a show of solidarity and support, numerous local organizations convened at the Durant Children’s Center in Sumter for the “heart2heart” Community Fair. This event aimed to shine a light on Child Abuse Awareness Month, with over a dozen booths set up to provide resources and raise awareness about the issue.

A heartfelt tribute was also unveiled in the form of a memorial wall honoring the three young victims, adorned with care and respect by Soriah McClendon, a close friend of the children’s mother. McClendon nostalgically recounted her cherished memories of the children and their mother, emphasizing their enduring impact on her life.

Following the tragic loss, the formation of a non-profit called “A to the Third Power” emerged, with the purpose of spreading love and support throughout the community in memory of the children. McClendon emphasized the importance of healing, both individually and collectively, through fostering a community built on love and unity.

Through these challenging times, Rush expressed hope that the community’s response to the tragedy would serve as a powerful lesson for everyone. He commended the overwhelming support and unity shown by the community, highlighting the importance of coming together in times of need and offering full-hearted support to one another. Rush’s reflections underscored the resilience and compassion that have emerged in the face of adversity, inspiring others to follow the community’s example of solidarity and generosity.
