TREMONTON, Utah — A tragic incident unfolded earlier this month when authorities confirmed a father killed his daughter before taking his own life, marking a heartbreaking murder-suicide in the community.
On December 16, law enforcement responded to a call regarding a severe domestic situation involving a child. At the time, police remained tight-lipped about the specifics, choosing not to disclose any fatalities. However, on Tuesday, Tremonton-Garland Police Chief Dustin Cordova publicly identified the nature of the incident, stating it was a deliberate act involving both the father and his daughter.
“This was an isolated domestic situation where a father intentionally took his child’s life before tragically ending his own,” Cordova said in his announcement. While addressing the public, he refrained from releasing the names of the individuals involved to protect the families affected by the incident.
Obituaries for the victims have begun to circulate, revealing the identities of the father, 36-year-old Ricky Gonzales, and his 7-year-old daughter, Rissa AdaLynn Gonzales, who was described as full of life and energy. Rissa’s obituary paints a vivid picture of her spirit, highlighting her love for dance, gymnastics, and softball. Friends and family remembered her affectionately as the “Filter Queen” for her playful use of Snapchat filters.
A GoFundMe page has been established by a friend of Rissa’s mother to assist with funeral costs, emphasizing the immense loss felt by the community. The page expresses the mother’s grief, noting that she has lost her daughter and is now tasked with planning a funeral for a second grader whose life was just beginning.
The incident has sparked widespread sadness and reflection among residents of Tremonton. Chief Cordova noted the emotional toll such incidents have on the community and the responding officers. “This painful reality affects not only the family but everyone involved in the aftermath,” he shared.
Local law enforcement officials recently dealt with another tragedy—two officers were killed in August while responding to a domestic violence case in the area, compounding the grief faced by the community this year. Cordova remarked on the ongoing challenges, expressing solidarity with grieving families and emphasizing the need for compassion and understanding.
The community is now left to process the profound loss while rallying around Rissa’s mother in this time of dire need. Support networks and mental health resources are being highlighted as crucial means for individuals grappling with grief and hopelessness following this heartbreaking event.
