Tarlac City, Philippines — A tragic vehicular collision at the Tarlac City Toll Plaza Exit on the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals on Thursday, with more than 20 others sustaining injuries. The accident involved a bus, an 18-wheeler truck, a van, and a crossover SUV, according to the head of the local disaster response office.
Marvin Guiang, director of the Tarlac Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), reported that the impact of the crash was intense enough to severely crush two vehicles involved. Among the deceased were six minors, and a couple who tragically lost their lives while their infant survived unscathed.
Guiang noted that, despite the extensive damage, some individuals managed to escape with their lives. The driver of the van was one of the survivors, along with the baby found in the car. Passengers aboard the bus reportedly suffered only minor injuries.
“The force of the collision was overwhelming,” Guiang stated, detailing how the victims in the two crushed vehicles were almost entirely trapped. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, working to assist the injured and recover those trapped in the wreckage.
The police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Initial reports suggest that speed and visibility might have played a role in the catastrophic accident, although no definitive conclusions have been reached yet.
