Piedmont, Alabama — A tragic accident at Indian Mountain ATV Park on Saturday led to the deaths of two adults and injuries to seven children. The incident, which involved two utility task vehicles (UTVs) colliding on a park trail, has left the community in shock.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office reported that the accident occurred shortly after 3:45 p.m. local time. Authorities confirmed that the two vehicles were carrying a total of 11 individuals: nine in one vehicle and two in the other. Following the collision, one adult was pronounced dead at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries after being airlifted to a hospital.
Among those injured were seven children, aged between 1 and 12 years old. Three of the young victims were transported by air to local medical facilities, while the remaining four were taken by ambulance. The conditions of the children have not been disclosed, but local officials expressed deep concern for their well-being.
Cherokee County Coroner Paul McDonald extended heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families, acknowledging the profound loss felt within the community. He urged the public to keep the affected families and first responders in their thoughts and prayers.
Local reports indicate that after the initial collision, the UTV carrying the larger group continued another 150 feet before rolling over and striking a tree. The two occupants in the other UTV were unharmed. The victims who lost their lives are believed to be a married couple, although their identities have not yet been publicly released.
The park, featuring more than 4,700 acres of off-road trails, is popular for recreational activities like off-highway vehicle riding, camping, fishing, and hiking. It is nestled within the Appalachian Mountain range, drawing outdoor enthusiasts from various regions.
As the investigation into the crash continues, the Cherokee County community is left mourning the loss and hoping for the swift recovery of those injured.
