The storms wreaked havoc Friday, starting in Missouri and extending into southeastern Kentucky, where officials fear the death toll may rise.
In Kentucky, Governor Andy Beshear reported 14 deaths, stressing the need for prayer for affected families amid ongoing recovery efforts. The scene in Laurel County was particularly grim, as rescuers combed through the wreckage of toppled homes and overturned vehicles in search of survivors. Earlier reports had identified at least nine casualties following a tornado that swept through the area.
Footage from drone cameras captured the scale of the destruction in London, Kentucky, revealing a landscape littered with debris and damaged infrastructure. London Mayor Randall Weddle described the devastation as unprecedented, stating that he had never witnessed such destruction before. The National Weather Service indicated a “large, extremely dangerous” tornado was confirmed in the region shortly after midnight.
As the storm system battered parts of Missouri, St. Louis bore the brunt. Reports indicated five fatalities linked to the severe weather, primarily due to a church roof collapse during the tornado. Local officials described scenes of destruction across the city, with extensive damage affecting residential and commercial buildings alike.
Emergency management personnel have confirmed that many individuals have sustained injuries, with hospitals treating dozens of patients. St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer remarked on the extensive damage, noting that entire city blocks were impacted.
