The attack happened outside the Van Dyke Houses, where police said the victims were expected to survive.
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A midday stabbing outside the Van Dyke Houses in Brownsville left two women and one man injured Sunday, alarming neighbors who said the violence unfolded quickly and in full view of people moving through the area.
Police said the attack happened just before 1 p.m. on Dumont Avenue near 430 Dumont Ave. All three victims were taken to hospitals and were expected to survive. Even so, key questions remained unresolved as investigators worked the case without an arrest and without public cooperation from the people who were wounded, according to local reports.
Authorities identified the injured as a 25-year-old woman stabbed in the lower abdomen, a 23-year-old man stabbed in the abdomen and a 26-year-old woman who suffered a stab wound to the buttocks. The wounds were serious enough to send all three to local hospitals, but officials said none of the injuries was expected to be fatal.
Witness accounts and video captured the disorder that erupted outside the building. Footage shared with News 12 showed a woman being thrown to the ground during the confrontation. A man in the scene appeared to be holding a knife. In another striking detail, a person pushing a baby stroller moved through the area while the struggle was still unfolding, showing how suddenly the violence broke into an ordinary Sunday afternoon.
Neighbors said the speed of the attack made it hard to understand what was happening in real time. One woman who watched from her window said the scene turned violent almost at once. She told News 12 that everything was moving so fast as people crowded around the fight. Police, meanwhile, have not publicly explained whether the episode began as a dispute between people who knew each other or whether someone else joined the conflict.
The uncertainty has become a central part of the investigation. Police sources said the victims were not cooperating, leaving detectives to lean more heavily on video, witness interviews and any physical evidence recovered at the scene. Officials have not said how many attackers may have been involved, whether a single suspect carried out all three stabbings or whether anyone else suffered lesser injuries during the confrontation.
Residents interviewed after the attack described a neighborhood still trying to make sense of another burst of violence in broad daylight. Mike, described as a lifelong neighbor, said incidents like the stabbing create a feeling that progress can reverse quickly. His comments reflected the frustration of residents who see normal activity interrupted by sudden violence near their homes.
Police had not announced an arrest in the case as of the latest published updates. Investigators are expected to keep reviewing video and witness statements as they try to determine who carried out the stabbing and what led to it.
