Three Killed in Brazen West Side Shooting Near Barbershop

Police said gunmen got out of a vehicle and opened fire near a barbershop on Friday afternoon.

CHICAGO, Ill. — Three people were killed and a fourth was critically wounded Friday afternoon in a broad-daylight shooting near a barbershop in West Garfield Park, where police said at least two gunmen got out of a vehicle and fired on a group standing on the sidewalk.

The shooting happened just before 5 p.m. near North Pulaski Road and West Maypole Avenue on the city’s West Side. Authorities said four people were gathered outside when a vehicle pulled up and the attackers opened fire. By Saturday, officials had identified one of the people killed as Rickia Williams, 32, of Chicago. Police had not announced any arrests or released a motive.

Investigators said the victims were standing on or near the sidewalk in the 4000 block of West Maypole Avenue when the shooting began around 4:45 p.m. Witness accounts cited by police said at least two armed people got out of a vehicle and fired multiple shots before leaving the scene. A 36-year-old man was struck several times and was pronounced dead at the scene. Williams was shot in the head and taken to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Another male victim, whose age had not been released, was also shot multiple times and was later pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital.

A fourth victim, a 35-year-old man, was shot several times and was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. CBS Chicago also reported that another person was transported to a hospital in good to fair condition but had not been shot. Police had not publicly explained that person’s connection to the attack by Saturday afternoon. Area Four detectives were assigned to the case, and investigators had not said whether the shooting was targeted, gang-related or tied to any dispute.

The gunfire happened outside a barbershop and convenience store at the corner of Pulaski Road and Maypole Avenue, a busy stretch that remained taped off as officers examined the area. The Chicago Sun-Times reported police appeared focused for a time on Gotcha Faded, a barbershop near the shooting scene, while officers moved in and out of the storefront and guarded the entrance. Traffic on Pulaski Road was blocked between Maypole Avenue and Lake Street as detectives worked through the evening.

The scene drew a large emergency response and left neighbors shaken. NBC Chicago aerial video showed police tape around businesses and vehicles on the block, underscoring how much of the intersection had been sealed off after the shooting. The Sun-Times reported that several people gathered near the scene, hugging and crying, while declining to speak publicly. ABC7 later reported that one woman at the scene said one of the victims was her cousin, adding a personal note to what police described as a brazen daytime attack.

By Saturday, the clearest public update was the identification of Williams by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. Police had still not released the names of the two male victims who were killed, and the injured man remained hospitalized in critical condition. Detectives were continuing to interview witnesses, review evidence and search for the people who opened fire.
