Three arrested in deadly Brighton-area home invasion, deputies say

Deputies say Corey Webb, 22, died after intruders forced their way into a John Hill Road home late Monday.

BRIGHTON, Tenn. — Tipton County deputies responding around 11:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, to a reported home invasion on John Hill Road found 22-year-old Corey Webb shot; he died at the hospital a short time later, and three suspects were arrested by Tuesday, authorities said.

Investigators said multiple armed intruders entered the residence near Fayne Road in Brighton while a woman and child were inside. By midday Tuesday, detectives traced suspects to a Memphis address, secured a search warrant and took three people into custody: two juveniles, ages sixteen and seventeen, and 20-year-old Ashton Wayne Wolsefer. Sheriff Shannon Beasley said the arrests came within about 12 hours of the shooting. One teen was treated for a gunshot wound believed to have been inflicted by the victim during the struggle. Officials emphasized the case remains active as they reconstruct the sequence of events and analyze evidence collected from the house and the vehicle used to flee.

Beasley said the three face counts of first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery and especially aggravated burglary. Wolsefer is jailed without bond pending a Jan. 6 appearance before a General Sessions judge. The teens face the same charges in juvenile court; prosecutors will review whether to seek transfer to adult court. “We will now be the voice for Mr. Webb and his family,” Beasley said, thanking deputies, detectives and the U.S. Marshals Two River Violent Fugitive Task Force for assistance in the case. A family member, who asked not to be named, called Webb generous and said they had spoken with him earlier Monday.

The shooting rattled a quiet stretch of John Hill Road, a two-lane route bordered by homes and small pastures northeast of Memphis. Neighbors reported lights and sirens overnight and crime-scene tape up through the morning as investigators documented rooms inside the home and the entry point. Deputies did not immediately release the number of shots fired, the firearm type or how many suspects entered before the confrontation. Detectives are examining phones and possible surveillance footage from nearby properties to identify the route into and out of the area. Authorities said no other residents were physically injured.

Records released Tuesday list Webb as 22 and from Brighton. The sheriff’s office said the break-in unfolded in front of a woman and a child who were inside with him. Detectives recovered items they believe are connected to the robbery motive alleged in the charging documents, though the type and value of those items were not immediately disclosed. Investigators also seized clothing and possible weapons during the Memphis search. Forensic testing, including ballistics, will be conducted to match shell casings to any recovered firearm and to determine which shots were fired by whom.

As the investigation continues, court proceedings begin next week. Wolsefer’s first appearance is scheduled for Jan. 6; bond, counsel and preliminary hearing dates could be set then. The teens will appear separately in juvenile court. Deputies said additional arrests are possible if evidence shows others helped plan the break-in or aided the suspects afterward. Authorities expect to provide updates as lab results come back and interviews conclude.

By Tuesday evening, the sheriff’s office reported three suspects in custody and no broader threat to the neighborhood. Investigators plan to release more details ahead of the Jan. 6 hearing.
