TERRORISM: Malaysia Must Remain Vigilant Against Extremism Threats

ULU TIRAM, Malaysia – The recent attack in Ulu Tiram that resulted in the tragic deaths of two police officers highlights the ongoing threat of violent extremism in the country. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain has revealed that the attacker, believed to be a lone wolf terrorist, had planned the incident meticulously.

Although initial reports suggested a link to the extremist group Jemaah Islamiyah, it was later clarified that the attacker’s father had ties to the group. Despite the perceived “low-level” nature of the attack, experts warn that incidents like these should not be viewed in isolation.

Terrorism experts like R. Paneir Selvam point to past events, such as the 1980 attack on the Batu Pahat police station and the 2001 incident at the Guar Chempedak police station, as reminders of the persistent threat of violent extremism in Malaysia. Additionally, the 2000 siege at Kampung Sauk and the activities of the Al-Arqam movement serve as stark examples of the country’s history with militant groups.

The rise of ISIS in the region also posed a significant challenge, with Malaysia seeing a higher enlistment rate compared to neighboring Indonesia. The government’s efforts to combat extremism have resulted in the arrest of individuals involved with ISIS and its sympathizers. However, experts emphasize the importance of addressing the root causes of terrorism and tackling the religious and ideological aspects that contribute to violent extremism.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi has called for increased surveillance and intelligence efforts to prevent future attacks. Experts like Prof Dr Ahmad Fauzi stress the need to address the religious and ideological motivations behind extremism to effectively combat distorted worldviews.

As Malaysia grapples with the threat of violent extremism, it is crucial for authorities to remain vigilant and proactive in countering radical ideologies. The country’s leadership, under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, plays a vital role in striking a balance between opposing ideologies to combat extremism effectively. By addressing the root causes of terrorism and promoting national unity, Malaysia aims to prevent the spread of violent extremism and safeguard its future.
