Tension Erupts in Udaipur After Violent Assault on Vegetable Vendor Leads to Protests and Arrests

Udaipur, India — Tensions erupted in the city following a violent altercation late Thursday that left a vegetable vendor and his father injured. The incident, which began over a dispute regarding lemon prices, escalated into a brutal attack, prompting widespread protests and market closures on Friday.

Local authorities reported that the conflict originated when two customers confronted vendor Rahul and his father, Satveer, around 10 p.m. The situation was temporarily defused by onlookers; however, the customers returned with a group of five to seven individuals armed with sticks, leading to a vicious assault. Satveer, 50, suffered significant injuries and was subsequently transported to MB Hospital for treatment.

The attack incited fury among local traders, who reacted by setting fire to several empty vegetable carts in the area. Firefighters were called to the scene to extinguish the flames, and police forces from eight different stations were deployed to manage the emerging unrest.

In the aftermath, markets across Udaipur, including Dhan Mandi, Nehru Bazaar, Nada Khada, Delhi Gate Crossing, and Bapu Bazaar, were shuttered as traders organized a protest demanding justice. Authorities engaged with protest leaders, and by Friday afternoon, normal operations resumed after a negotiation.

Police officials confirmed the arrest of four individuals: Tofiq Hussain, Anas Hussain, Taskeen Khan, and Arbaaz Hussain. Additionally, two juveniles were detained in connection with the case. Assistant Superintendent of Police Umesh Ojha noted that the investigation continues as law enforcement seeks the main suspect who remains on the run.

The investigation benefited from surveillance footage, which provided critical evidence in identifying those involved. In response to the incident and to ensure community safety, police maintained an increased presence in the affected areas.

As the community reflects on this incident, concerns about public safety and the underlying tensions in the area remain at the forefront. Local leaders and residents are calling for measures to prevent future violence and foster a more secure environment for all citizens.
