Teens Sentenced in Deadly Robbery Case Targeting Hispanic Men in Covington

Covington, Kentucky – Two teenagers involved in a deadly robbery have been handed down sentences, according to the Kenton County Commonwealth Attorney Rob Sanders. Joseph McMeans, 17, received a 25-year sentence after pleading guilty to murder, assault, and robbery. His accomplice, 16-year-old Jamareon Jones-Snapp, was sentenced to 15 years for facilitation of murder and robbery.

The incident took place last January, when McMeans and Jones-Snapp attempted to rob two Hispanic men in Covington. Unfortunately, the situation turned deadly when one of the men, Selvin Alvardo, was shot in the head and later died at the hospital. The other man, Hector Saur, was shot in the leg but recovered from his injuries.

Sanders explained that the teens targeted Hispanic men under the assumption that they would be carrying cash and have limited access to bank accounts. In a tragic turn of events, their armed robbery resulted in a loss of life. Surveillance footage played a crucial role in identifying the suspects, as McMeans was captured wearing a distinct jacket with Looney Toons characters, the same one he was seen wearing during the robbery.

Initially, McMeans denied being involved in the shooting, but later admitted to wearing the jacket seen in the surveillance footage. According to Sanders, this case serves as a chilling reminder of the potential consequences when armed robberies take place. The sentences handed down to the two teenagers stand as a stark reminder of the severity of their actions and the tragic outcome of their attempted robbery.
