Teenager Sentenced to Life for Fatal Stabbing at 16th Birthday Party

Bath, England – Three teenagers have been sentenced for the killing of Mikey Roynon at a house party in Bath, Somerset. Shane Cunningham, Leo Knight, and Cartel Bushnell were involved in a fatal stabbing incident that took place during an argument at the party on June 10, 2023.

Cunningham, 16, was convicted of murder, while his two friends, also 16, were convicted of manslaughter after being cleared of the more serious charge. Bushnell received a nine-year sentence, while Knight was given a slightly longer sentence of nine years and six months.

The boys initially denied the charges but were found guilty in March 2024. Mr. Justice Saini, presiding over the case at Bristol Crown Court, handed Cunningham a life sentence with a minimum term of 16 years before he can be considered for parole.

During the trial, it was revealed that Cunningham had stabbed Mikey Roynon, claiming it was in self-defense. Mikey suffered a severe injury and later died from the attack. The assailants fled the scene, disposing of their weapons and clothing, but were eventually captured by police.

Mikey’s family expressed their grief in victim impact statements, with his mother, Hayley Ryall, describing the profound impact of losing her son. Mikey’s father and grandmother also shared their heartbreak and devastation over the senseless violence that took Mikey’s life.

Detective Inspector Mark Newbury, who led the investigation, emphasized the tragic consequences of knife crime and called for community support to prevent similar tragedies in the future. He urged parents to talk to their children about the devastating effects of violence and the importance of avoiding confrontation.
