BOISE, Idaho — A deadly shooting outside a West Boise party that police say killed a woman who was not the intended target has led to the arrests of two teenagers, while investigators continue examining whom the gunfire was meant to hit and why.
Destiney Gonzalez, 22, of Caldwell, was found wounded on the front porch of a home in the 3900 block of West Clement Road shortly before 6 a.m. Aug. 30. First responders attempted to save her, but she died. Police have said evidence indicates someone in a sedan-style vehicle fired multiple shots toward the residence while a party was underway.
The home was being used as a short-term vacation rental at the time, according to police. Investigators said numerous people were inside or around the property when officers responded. No other injuries were reported.
From the early stages of the investigation, Boise police said they did not believe Gonzalez was the person the shooter intended to hit. Detectives instead said evidence suggested the gunfire was aimed at the party or at one or more of the people attending it. Police have not publicly identified the suspected intended target or released a motive.
The Ada County Coroner’s Office later identified Gonzalez as a Caldwell resident. Her death was classified as a homicide. Authorities have released few personal details about Gonzalez beyond her name, age and city of residence.
As detectives worked to reconstruct what happened, police sought information from people who attended the gathering but had not yet been interviewed. Investigators also asked for photographs, recordings and other information from the neighborhood and specifically sought contact with rideshare drivers who made pickups or drop-offs near the party between 2:30 a.m. and 6 a.m.
That investigation led detectives to obtain arrest warrants Thursday for two teenagers. Police arrested an unnamed 17-year-old at a Caldwell home and Ulisses Macareno, 18, of Meridian, at a Meridian residence. Caldwell, Nampa and Meridian police assisted Boise investigators with the arrests.
Police allege the 17-year-old fired the weapon during the shooting and Macareno drove the vehicle. The juvenile faces a first-degree murder charge, while Macareno was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder by aiding and abetting. Both cases involve allegations that have not been proven in court.
Macareno was booked into the Ada County Jail, while the 17-year-old was taken to the Canyon County Juvenile Detention Center. Police have not released the juvenile’s name because of his age.
The arrests mark a major development in the case but do not resolve several central questions. Police have not publicly said what prompted the shooting, who was allegedly being targeted or what relationship, if any, the suspects had to people at the gathering. The Boise Police Department said its investigation remains ongoing.
