Teen Suspect Accused of Killing Woman During Vape Sale Meet

Investigators say the violence stemmed from a planned transaction.

BATON ROUGE, La. — A shooting at an apartment complex on Coursey Boulevard left one person dead and a teenager in custody after what authorities describe as a planned transaction turned violent Thursday evening.

Law enforcement officials say the case unfolded during a meetup arranged online, highlighting how routine exchanges can quickly become dangerous. Detectives are continuing to gather evidence while the suspect faces serious felony charges.

According to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded shortly after 8 p.m. on April 2 to reports of a shooting at the City Heights on Coursey apartment complex. When they arrived, they found a young woman inside a vehicle with a gunshot wound.

The victim, later identified as 19-year-old Darby Marmillion, was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, she later died from her injuries, authorities said.

Investigators believe the meeting was arranged for the sale of vape pens. During the encounter, a 16-year-old suspect allegedly entered the victim’s car. Detectives say the situation escalated when the suspect produced a firearm, took the items, and shot the victim.

Officials said the suspect fled the scene but was later apprehended. He is now facing charges including first-degree murder, armed robbery, illegal possession of a handgun by a juvenile, and obstruction of justice. Authorities have not released his name due to his age.

The apartment complex, located in a busy corridor of Baton Rouge, remained an active investigation scene for several hours Thursday night. Deputies secured the area, and investigators canvassed for evidence, including possible surveillance footage and witness statements.

Residents in the area reported a heavy police presence and said the incident has raised concerns about safety within the complex. Some described the shooting as sudden and alarming, noting that the complex is typically quiet during evening hours.

Law enforcement officials have not indicated whether the suspect targeted the victim specifically or if the crime was opportunistic. They also have not disclosed whether additional individuals may have been aware of or involved in arranging the meeting.

The case will proceed through juvenile court, where timelines for hearings or additional legal steps have not yet been publicly announced. Investigators said they are continuing to review evidence and interview witnesses as part of the ongoing probe.

Authorities said there is no ongoing threat connected to the incident and urged anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues.
