Counseling resources and added security followed the death of 17-year-old Juelyon Bennett, while police continued investigating the weekend gunfire.
EUCLID, Ohio — Euclid school officials are providing counseling and working with police on added security after a weekend shooting killed 17-year-old student Juelyon Bennett and injured three other people.
Bennett attended Euclid High School, and police said several other people involved in the Saturday evening shooting were current or former students of the school. The connection prompted a response that extended beyond the criminal investigation as students and staff returned to campus following Bennett’s death.
Euclid Schools said counseling resources were being made available for students and employees. The district said the safety and well-being of students and staff remained a priority. Euclid police also said they were working with school officials to provide additional security at the high school campus.
The shooting occurred Sept. 12 in the 27200 block of Shirley Avenue. Police were initially sent about 6:15 p.m. to East 260th Street and Shoreview Avenue after receiving a report of two people with gunshot wounds inside a vehicle. Officers determined that the gunfire had taken place on Shirley Avenue and sent more officers there.
A second development unfolded at Cleveland Clinic Euclid Hospital, where hospital staff told police that another vehicle had arrived carrying two people with gunshot wounds. Investigators later connected those victims to the same shooting.
Bennett died from his injuries. Police said the three surviving victims were a 16-year-old boy, a 17-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man, all from Cleveland. The two younger victims were reported in stable condition, while the 19-year-old was treated and released.
The updated police account corrected earlier reports that two minors had died. Authorities later said one person, Bennett, was killed and three others survived their injuries. Police have not publicly disclosed a motive or a detailed account of what led to the gunfire.
Investigators said they had identified the suspected shooters, but authorities had not announced charges in the case as of the latest available information. Police also said they were withholding additional details about the people involved while the investigation remained active.
The school response is continuing alongside that investigation. Counseling remains part of the district’s support for the school community, and police have said they are coordinating with school officials on security while detectives work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
