Authorities found firearms in the crashed vehicle and were still trying to identify its driver and locate an occupant who fled.
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A reported parking lot takeover in north Houston preceded a deputy pursuit that ended with a teenager dead, three others hospitalized and another occupant missing early Monday, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were called around 11:05 p.m. Sunday to a parking lot near Veterans Memorial Drive and FM 1960 after reports that vehicles were doing donuts, authorities said. A patrol unit attempted a traffic stop on one vehicle, but its driver fled. The sheriff’s office said five people were believed to have been inside and that most, if not all, were juveniles.
The vehicle traveled east on FM 1960 before turning south onto Ella Boulevard, Harris County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Aric Albers said. Investigators said the driver continued at a high rate of speed and turned off the vehicle’s headlights during the nighttime pursuit.
Near the 16500 block of Ella Boulevard, the vehicle struck a curb in the median and went out of control, according to authorities. It overturned repeatedly before landing upright. One teenager died at the scene, while three other occupants were taken to a hospital.
A fifth occupant reportedly left the area on foot after the crash. Deputies were searching for that person Monday. Authorities did not release a description or identity, and it remained unclear whether investigators had determined that person’s exact role in the events before the crash.
Investigators also recovered firearms from inside the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office. Officials had not announced whether the weapons were legally possessed, whether they were connected to another crime or whether their discovery would lead to charges. Authorities had also not publicly tied the firearms to the conduct that first brought deputies to the parking lot.
The sheriff’s office said investigators were interviewing the three hospitalized teenagers as they tried to determine who had been driving. The driver’s identity remained unresolved Monday, leaving investigators without a publicly identified person responsible for operating the vehicle during the pursuit.
The teenager who died had not been publicly identified. Authorities also had not released the ages or names of the hospitalized occupants, their medical conditions or further information about the person who fled.
No criminal charges had been announced as of Monday. The investigation remained focused on identifying the driver, finding the missing occupant and establishing what happened during the reported parking lot activity before deputies attempted the traffic stop.
